FAQ

An orthodontist is a trained specialist in the field of Orthodontics.  Just like any medical specialist, they have done further study in this specialised field, so are experts in what they do. They are the best, most qualified and experienced people to treat problems with the alignment of jaws and teeth. Whether you see us, or another orthodontist, make sure they are registered Orthodontist!

Yes we do, and we encourage a consultation with our experts if you are unsure or concerned about functional issues, developing crowding, underbites and overbites, and dental protrusions. Early diagnosis and treatment can sometimes prevent a lot of problems further down the track!

In saying this, we are also aware that some problems are far more cost effective to treat when the permanent teeth are mostly through at around 12 years of age. We will not recommend 2 phases of treatment, if one definitive treatment at a later stage will give the same outcome.

You are never too old for orthodontic treatment…

It is never too late to receive orthodontic treatment. We have patients as young as 5, and as old as 70 years of age!  In fact, we see many people begin their smile transformations at a later age. So no matter what your age, if you are having trouble with your teeth or jaws, book an appointment to see what we can do for you.

Yes, you are able to come directly to us without a referral!

If you think you have a problem related to the way your teeth or jaws function, you can book an appointment at our Bondi Junction orthodontic practice for a comprehensive examination. That said, it is important to have a general dentist and if you do not have one, we are more than happy to recommend one for you.

If you need x-rays, we can refer you for one at nearby Spectrum Radiology at Bondi Westfields. All x-rays (besides CBCT) are bulk billed.

At MyOrthodontist we offer interest free payment plans so you or your children can benefit from the orthodontic care needed. We also offer family discounts, so the whole family can enjoy the benefits of orthodontic treatment at the same time! If you are worried about paying for orthodontic treatment for yourself or your family, please call us so we can discuss what we can do for you.

At your first visit you will be given a clear quote/financial contract which outlines all fees involved in your orthodontic treatment. We don’t believe in hidden fees, we don’t believe in charging per appointment. Your fixed fee includes your treatment over the estimated period of time, all appointments within this time frame, and complimentary 12 month observation appointments once you have finished your active orthodontic treatment so that we can check on you and make sure everything is going well post treatment. So while it may seem like a large expense, do keep in mind that unlike other dental services where you might be treated over days/weeks, we get the privilege of seeing you for months/years!

At MyOrthodontist we ensure your first visit to us is always easy and painless. When you book an initial appointment, we will send you a welcome letter and with directions to our orthodontic practice in Bondi Junction. If you have not received these please contact us and we will send you another.

You will find a lot of “free orthodontic consultations” advertised from many expert providers. At MyOrthodontist, our consultations are $195, and for good reason. Our Orthodontists will thoroughly assess the patient’s teeth and jaws to effectively diagnose and recommend an appropriate treatment plan. Together with photographic records, Dr Tan likes to go through all the options and his recommendations with you, and welcome any questions you might have. Unlike most orthodontic consultations which are typically quick, this in-chair examination followed by a detailed discussion can take anywhere from 30-60 minutes. Following your consultation you will receive a clear financial contract with all fees involved in your orthodontic treatment. We don’t believe in hidden fees and surprise bills!

For patients who want metal-free, less invasive or obtrusive orthodontic treatment, we recommend Invisalign…

Invisalign is a revolutionary dental treatment that is removable, comfortable and virtually invisible! It is an orthodontic treatment that works around your lifestyle, so you don’t have to change a thing.

It is normally more difficult to take care of the teeth because the braces provide an obstacle between your toothbrush and your teeth…

However, it only takes 3 to 4 minutes, several times per day, to keep them perfectly clean. Be sure to abstain from sticky or flaky foods such as caramel or popcorn!

We first recommend you take your child to a GP to ensure there is nothing more sinister at play. If not, and your child has experience a narrowing of the jaws and dental crowding as a result of their mouth-breathing, we can assess, diagnose and treat their jaw to relieve them of this issue.

Wearing your retainer is an extremely important part of orthodontic treatment. Now that you have finished your treatment with aligners or braces, wearing retainers afterwards maintains and protects the smile into the future. Retainers are key to maintaining the success of orthodontic treatment over the long term. In fact, wearing retainers is equally as important as the orthodontic treatment itself!

The importance of a retainer
Retainers are custom-made orthodontic appliances that are designed to hold the teeth in their new positions after orthodontic treatment. If they are not worn as instructed by your orthodontist, the teeth will very rapidly begin to go crooked again, which can lead to costly re-treatment!

For how long?
Faces, teeth and jaws are guaranteed to change as we age. Small changes to the bite and tooth alignment post-treatment are normal as the body is always undergoing changes. Wearing a retainer for as long as possible is the best way to minimise these changes and make sure the teeth stay healthy and straight for years to come.

There are two types of retainers – fixed, and removable, and pros and cons to each. We are happy to discuss the difference between each in office. In most cases your treatment includes a removable retainer, issued at the end of your treatment. We also include complimentary observation (follow up) appointments for 12 months after your treatment is finished, to make sure your teeth remain straight and to check that you are wearing your retainer as instructed! There is also a fixed retainer option that can be chosen. Please note fixed retainers will incur an additional fee.

Look after your removable retainer

·       Keep it safe: When the retainer is not being worn, it should always be kept safe in its container.   Retainers shouldn’t be placed in hot water, the dishwasher, washing machine, direct sunlight or near a heat source – they’ll easily warp. Caring for a retainer properly will ensure it lasts the distance!   Retainers should always be removed before eating and toothbrushing as well as when swimming or playing sports.

·       Clean it regularly: Retainers should be rinsed after every meal and can be cleaned with a gentle brush. Retainers can also be soaked with a cleanser tablet or mouthwash to keep them fresh and germ-free.

·       Schedule regular retainer check-ups: If the retainer starts to lose shape or isn’t fitting correctly, call us immediately.  MyOrthdontist provide complimentary observation appointments for 12 months after debanding of your braces/your last aligner.
